I can’t believe I’m actually typing this, because it has been a (seemingly) distant dream of mine for a very, very long time. But nevertheless…. I’M GOING TO NEW ZEALAND.
In early July, I’ll be moving to a small, rural town called Taihape on the North Island of New Zealand to live with a lovely family as their Au Pair for a year. In respect for their privacy, I won’t go into the details of the arrangement, but essentially I get to become a part of their family and help watch over their beautiful daughter while being provided a free place to stay and a car, plus weekly pocket money. For me, this opportunity is a win-win-win-win situation. I love kids, I get to live with amazing people in an amazing place with no expenses other than my travels, AND get paid while doing it? Uh, count me in!
After 6 years of having to put my dreams aside, among many other things (read more about that here), I’m finally free. If you live/have lived with chronic pain or illness, you understand why I have to do this now that I’m feeling healthy. And anyone can understand that we never know what tomorrow will bring or how long we’ll be here, so the only time we ever have is now.
So, I’m going for it! I’ll be leaving Iowa behind on June 21st and will arrive in Christchurch, New Zealand on June 23rd. I’m going two weeks early to travel the South Island before flying into Palmerston North to meet my new family. Have I mentioned how excited I am? SO. EXCITED.
In the coming weeks, I’ll be writing more about my decision to do this, telling my family, friends, and work, and the preparation involved for a year’s worth of adventures. Until next time!
